Refinishing a Front Door and Door Frame
One of the projects we can do for you is to build or refinish the front door and door frame of your home. We’re going to review reasons people call us to refinish their door and frame and the psychological effect of walking through a doorway.
We all want a beautiful front door
A door tells a visitor what they can expect on the other side. An elegant entry implies there is an elegant room on the other side, a nod to our success. A lovely door is worthy of a beautiful door frame. Both the door and the structure should be refinished at the same time because an attractive door in a shabby frame sends a mixed message. The front door and frame should also complement the architecture of the house, which is why wood door and frames are so popular.
When a visitor enters a home, we say they walk through the door, but that would be pretty silly, wouldn’t it? If a visitor walked through a door, maybe they’d leave an outline of their body in the wood like an old cartoon. But a visitor opens the door and walks through the doorway, creating a mental change.
The act of walking through a doorway is significant
Scientists tell us that the act of walking through a doorway causes switches to flip in our brains. The action makes us forgetful because the doorway itself signals our minds that we have finished a task. We often draw a blank. So, for example, if you’re on your way home and intend to do your laundry as soon as you walk in the doorway, once you get inside, there is a reasonably high chance you’ll forget about the washing. Hopefully, you’ll remember it later.
For a visitor, walking through a doorway can have the same effect. Once they get inside, they forget what is on the outside because the act of walking through the door frame creates a new experience. We all hope it’s a pleasant one.
The frame may fall victim to mishaps
The door frame, even more than the door, is the guardian of our homes. The reason is that when a villain kicks in a door, the goal is to break the frame, not the door itself. When a door gets kicked in, the frame bears the brunt of the damage. When the door frame is compromised, a burglar can gain entry.
Also, doors and frames rot and can be damaged by the tens of thousands of times the door is opened and closed through the years. Sun and wet weather take their toll on a door frame, even on one which is under the eaves or covered by a porch. Eventually, it becomes well worth the effort to rebuild the door frame.
